One that got away and one that's still around

Post by overlander » Wed Feb 13, 2013 3:20 pm

I spotted this tidy Dormobile, a 6cyl petrol with O/D in the driveway of a deserted house in Leeds a while back. I watched it for several years and left my details but one day it disappeared. It does not come up on the DVLA website, shame about that. There was a similar looking one turned up at LATP a couple of years back but it was not this one.

In 1972 I took an American oilman and his dysfunctual family from Dakar to Timbuktu in these two Carawagons pictured in Niacola-Koba National Park, Senegal. There's no trace of the 'H' reg'd one on the left but EPG 313J survives and is currently taxed and presumably on the road. Has anybody seen it?

Hi John
Just looking at that picture of the 'Dormobile' and noticed that it has a Carawagon roof rack and seams to have Carawagon badges on the side of the wings?

Can you blow up that area of the wing?

Cheers Mick

I noticed that too Mick, plus the *PC reg I'd say a Carawagon 'Continental' that someone added a roof to later?

I've zoomed in on the rear of the o/s/f wing Mick but positively identify a 'Carawagon' badge - but it is quite likely it is. Yes the roof rack appears to be a Brownchurch, fitted to all my expedition Land Rovers in those days. The back was full of stuff so I couldn't really see inside but then again the photo was taken in 2005 and these days I can't even remember what I had for my breakfast this lunch-time.

cheers

John H

PS, I'm also trying to find out whether the owner of this 2A, spotted in Northern Laos a couple of years back, is one of us.

Should be 'CANNOT positively identify' - must learn to read post before hitting the button.

Just found another photo with the caption - 'Is this a Dormowagon or a Caramobile?' so I must have had my suspicions at the time.

Could be another of those converted without the roof option, either because the owner had a roof lined up or couldn't afford it at the time

Either way, I agree, it certainly looks Carawagon-ish and has the Searle badges, so looks like the roof was added afterwards.

We've seen several Carawagons surface in the last year or so without the roof option - perhaps it was seen as an expensive extra at the time?
