dormobile roof - fixed on inside or outside?

Post by AlexB » Fri Apr 26, 2013 7:17 pm

I think I know the answer but some confirmation wouldn't hurt.

Green Dormobile although rebuilt in all other respects, hasn't had it's roof messed with, and has a few pinholes in the top corners.

Blue Dormobile does seem to have had it's roof messed with as there are new screws and nuts all over it mostly too long. Canvas is in very good nick (and a brand new spare came with it!) but is ripped in the bottom outside corners, ripped is perhaps too strong, think stretched too far so the seams have given.

After raising the Green one's roof to get it the new wardrobe checked for fitting, I realised that the fastenings - long pieces of alluminium plate screwed into the top ontop of the canvas - are on the outside, whereas the Blue one' have been placed inside the canvas - hence, I believe, why they are so tight.

Just to give me comfort, where are all yours fitted - outside I should think - but confirmation would be good.

Hi Alex,

I think (if I've understood the question correctly) that they should be on the outside - all the aluminium strips on mine are on the outside. I think the reason one of your roofs have the strips on the inside is because the canvas was replaced at some point and its easier to mount the strips from the inside.

Hi Alex,
The strips on my roof were fitted outside the canvas and were sealed with some strange putty type sealant, I'm trying to fit a new canopy to my roof at the moment but I'm finding it impossible to get it sitting correct like the original :aaagh: I just cannot get the stripes horizontal :banghead: so I might just refit the old one and paint the inside of it with some flexi paint.

I assume you mean these aluminium strips
