carawagon build no's

Hi

Having spent the last 2 mondays at the Heritage Centre
at gaydon.I looked through (i don't know how many 100 pages)
of records,to find out how many carawagons were built.

As most of you know the carawagon was built on

109" RHD export chassis, and series 2 began with chassis no 252

I am only interested in series 2 landrovers the figure below
does'nt include series 3 or 5 door carawagons.(i am going to
get the 5 door no's at a later date)

The number built between 1962 and 1971 was 131 total

This number is lower than i expected.It doesn't include
a small number of owners that took their own landrover
to Searle's for them to convert.

this is maybe one of the reasons they are selling for
£6000 to £8000 !!!!

That number is a real surprise and makes Carawagons a lot rarer than we thought

Of course, the number doesn't include any 88" based Carawagons/Safari Sleepers and as you say, doesn't include any 109" SW versions, S3s or those converted for customers after being bought.

Something I have been meaning to look at for a while! You're probably somewhat closer than me, however. You weren't bored enough to copy every item out, were you?

Interesting to see how early they were appearing in the LR books - not something I have been all that sure on. I think the earliest I know of would be 1964.

Possibly more to do with cost Dan; more expensive than a Dormobile so were seen as the 'posh' expedition camper

BTW I am joking, I would like a Carawagon but one without the roof, a proper overland vehicle like John used to own.

I know they did make some as the roof was a very expensive option, but to me a Carawagon without a roof is just a 109" with a bed, cooker and sink!
You can't stand up to put your trousers on without a lifting roof

Mine came as a 109" Carawagon with safari roof, though with the full length 'paraphernalia pockets' where the bunks are normally stowed, but I came across a lifting roof on ebay and fitted that.

I had heard there were just 12 or 19 made, (can't remember which number), but I've no idea if that was a guess or a known fact

I think Phillip will just be concentrating on the Series 2 & 2A era which is a big enough job on its own.

I might think about spending a couple of days down there next summer if I get a chance, and check up on the S3s unless someone beats me to it

No, I don't agree. Both Dormobile and Carawagon did specials without the roofs... Pretty practical and genuine in my eyes. The big advantage is the possibility of a full sized roof rack. My Dormi had one over the lifting roof, the PO still has it if I want it...
