Just realised that you have only looked at 252 chassis numbers... that's 2.25p only? 6 pots would be 346 prefix, and diesel something else (that, off the top of my head, I do not know!). These are all for utilities. After '67 I think quite a few were made as six pots.

the landrover archive chap told me there are
2 lists for the 60's and 70's
252 chassis rhd export utility (soft top/truck cab/hard top)
??? chassis rhd export 5 door
this was regardless of engine choice
I will speak to him tomorrow to confirm this

I think if I needed the extra storage space, I'd probably make an over the bonnet roof rack with vertical stays from the front bumper.
What John was driving in that old picture (if that's the one you are referring to, from the 1970s with John in a hat?) wasn't a camper and was probably seating 11/12 passengers so their luggage had to go somewhere.
The most our Carawagons/Dormobiles can seat is 5 or 6, and the most they can sleep is 4 so unless you pack very heavily I can't see why you would need a full length roof rack on a camper :shrug
In fact, with a standard roof, the most you could sleep is 2!
Of course, if you were a family of 6 and you had an awning or tent as well, that could be a different matter
Me? I'll stick with being able to put my trousers on standing up - I've tried camping in a standard 109" and didn't like it!

I have spoken with gaydon,and they now
tell me that 252 was 4cyl petrol only.I am going
back on monday to research the 4cyl diesel
277,and 6cyl 346.I will then post the true no,
of carawagons,so ignore the 131 total

Ah, could be quite a few more then - there seems to be quite a few 6 pots (or originally 6 pot) knocking around.
It would probably have made sense for long haul campers to have been specified with the 6 pot or Diesel due to the distances they were likely to cover, I would think

Hence why I said 'like'.... A standard roofed version is just a bit different and seeing I already own the King of Land Rovers I wouldn't need another lifting roof.....John will be able to answer as he has been there and done it whilst the rest of us just speculate, but didn't a lot of overlanders prefer a Standard type LR back in the 60s/70's?

With regards to storage... my Carawagon is a 4 berth, but the family who owned it were a family of five. I have heard tales of them returning from station in Germany and having one of the sons posted in through the side opening windows on top of all the kit in the back!

Back then it always had the standard Carawagon roof rack, with the 'slats' made from 1" aluminium box section which looks to be 1/8" wall or so from period photos... I have ditched the standard style roof rack (as quaint and nice as it looks) for a period Brownchurch rack cut down to fit over the cab portion. Much more practical for my needs.
EDIT: This is the rack I bought locally off ebay... the chap bought it from Manchester University who used it on a trans-Sahara expedition (so would love to find pics of this!) but he used it on his 109" (in the pic) on many a camping trip and Scout camp adventure... I will cut off the front for the Carawagon and the back 8' or so will be used on the 88" along with the rear ladder... bargain! The front is a jerry can rack and can take 8 (I think) 20l cans with a bar to lock through the handles (which the PO is trying to locate, but could easily be made I would think)
