Carawagon roof seals

Hi all,

We're just starting to refurbish the roof on my new Carawagon, and have determined the seals we need.

Note that at different stages of production, or as repairs have been made, different seals may have been used, but these seem to be the originals for 1966/7.

We got these from http://www.coh-baines.co.uk/, as they seem to have a vast selection.
You can download their catalogue, or ask for one (it's 112 pages!!), and the pictures are all life-size so easy to work out what you need.

For the front and rear edges of the aluminium panel, 3m of:

The same seal we intend to use for the top side hinge, just opened up and one side trapped between the hinge and the aluminium before riveting. Another 5m needed for that.
I think the original was a right-angle section of thin rubber, but I can't seem to find any thin enough, and the U section works well, wrapping itself around the hinge when down and covering well when up.

For the top edge of the end pieces, where the aluminium rests when down (2m), and for the edges of the folding end panels (4m):

For the bottom side hinge, 5m of flat rubber strip is used:
FLAT RUBBER GLAZING STRIP; 1.6mm x 51mm (page 96)

If you need to replace the window seal, you'll need 6m of:

and 6m of the filler strip:

If you have a perspex end window, you'll need a short section (min order 1m) of:

For the edge of the roof section, we use this section which wraps around the edge of the wood better than the original:

Unfortunately, Coh Baines won't let you have a price list, so I found it best to email them for prices, quoting their order codes and lengths.
The total comes to around £200 if you use the above seals.

Just as an aside - on Patrick's Carawagon (1972), the end 'rest' pieces didn't have a vertical slot to use IRS0668 (tadpole), so we used 2m of

Hope that helps - I'll put up pics of the roof restoration as we carry it out.

Cheers,
Robin.

What about IRS 0693 for the long hinges between metal and wood roof section?

What page is that on, Dave?

EDIT - found it :thud:

Yep, that could work

If you try it, do let us know and I'll edit the original post.

Cheers,
Robin.

Hi,

I used Coh-Baines when I bought my roof seals, very helpful, fast delivery.
Does anyone know of a glue/sealant to stick the rubber to the long hinges. I tried a test piece with contact adhesive (once I had cleaned the rubber with some meths as it seemed to be coated with silicone) This was not very successful. It looked like the old seals were stuck and I guess this would help to stop any leaks......any ideas?

Many thanks Christine

Sikaflex or a generic polyurethane panel sealer/adhesive works well, I find

Hi,
I have just been checking through previous posts to see if I have missed anything before I fit the bendy section of the roof and noticed that the original seal that runs between the bendy ali hinge and ply (top corner) IRS 0004 EP has been replaced with IRS 0693 EP. If you all think this is a better solution I will order 0693. I did feel the original was a bit flimsy and will also be quite difficult to fit.

The roof is now flocked and looking good. I did not fix the hinges because if I had fitted the seal 0004 it would have got in the way, also I was able to transport the roof on the frame which kept it sturdy. The ali was masked off a couple of mm over where the hinge sits so when it is properly fitted it will just clip the edge of the flock still creating a good seal to the aluminium but leaving a neat edge.

Regards Christine

Hi Christine,

Yes, I used 0639 on the later roofs, at Dave's suggestion.
It's much more substantial and makes a good seal with the roof up or down

Looking forward to pictures of the flocking, and more details - did you see how they did it, or get a description of their process?
Also, if you don't mind, an approx. price?

Cheers,
Robin.

Hi Robin,

Thanks for the reply, I am going to fetch the roof on Monday so I have time to order IRS 0693 EP seals for the top hinge, having looked at the picture of Dave's roof it looks a much better solution than the original.

I will give an update when I have seen how the flocking looks.

Christine

hi robin
Do you have any photos of the roof going back together with the new seal as my roof is quite diffent side to side and the intertube some has used as weather strips is misleading?

Thanks
Ben
