Hello all

I have been snooping around here for some time and thought it was time introduced myself.

My name is Roger and for the last 6 months or so I have been getting to know my Dormobile, named 'Dora the Explorer' by my kids.

She is a late export IIa, vehicle 35101076H, engine 3453904B. My reading suggests this means late 1971 build, but the Dormobile number on the wiper motor cover says 72, so maybe right at the end of the IIa Dormobile run?

She had been in storage for 8-10 years before coming to me, and used in dry inland areas prior to that. Over the last several months I have been slowly recommisioning her and working steadily through several years' deferred maintenance - and learning a lot.

She runs well now, though I am not sure I'm getting the best out of the 6 pot yet.

Last weekend we went away camping in her as a family - three kids, wife and borrowed tent - and had a ball. Kids want to know where and when we're going next, and newby camper wife suggested we offer to buy the tent from our friends.

Great to see some pictures of your setup.

Where in Tas are you based? We're regulars over there (or it feels like it now - at least 5-6 trips in the last 15 years ).

We generally base ourselves on the outskirts of Hobart as we've got family there, but have done some of the usual 'tourist' routes down there; up to Launceston, down the East coast, Tasman peninsula, Bruny and of course, Cradle Mountain so feel that we know it a little bit.

Of course, we've only done lodges, motels & hotels with hire cars - not had much opportunity to off-road, I'm afraid, but would love to get into the South East 'unexplored' region some day

Maybe we'll see you there next time we're over.

Great country for exploring in the landy - lots of pretty spots within a couple of hours makes for lots of overnighters with the roof up. Great stuff!

Ah, right, just about as far from Hobart as you could get

We've just come back, in December, so it might be 2-3 years before we get back there again - lots of other places in the world to visit that don't require more than 24 hours in the air

When we do get back, we'll try to hook up with you

Re Dora's serial numbers - do you think I have it right that she's a 71 landy converted in 72?

Everything I have read says IIa production finished in 71.

Do we know if LR and MW 'model years' overlapped?

Not that it matters...

It could well be that it came off the LR production line as one of the last S2As in '71, but the conversion was delayed?

I would think that '71/'72 period was a busy time at MW - the early 70s was a peak time for VW Dormobiles, I think - it could just be that there was a waiting list

Or even that the customer took delivery from LR, and had it converted a few months later.

My 6 pot Dormobile was built by Land Rover about a year and 250 vehicles before yours. She was built in 1970, but converted in 1971. The MW number on mine is 52212.1.828 and she looks just like yours.
