Hello, my name’s Kip and I’m a Carawagonic.
(Well, my real name’s Karen but it’s not pronounced Karren so, to avoid confusion, I stick with my nickname).

I was idly trawling the Internet one evening in November 2013, looking at Series Landys (as you do), when I saw my Carawagon and knew I had to have her. I had nowhere to store her (I have to park my 90 Tdi – my daily drive - on the road) but thought I’d jump that hurdle once I’d got her. She’s now under cover, squeezed into a shed at the farm where I keep my alpacas. Christened Twiggy to reflect the era she was born in.
Twiggy was for sale because, sadly, her previous owner had died that summer. Sold with the contents as he had left them after his last expedition in May, I have inherited everything from his oven gloves (rather the worse for wear!) to his rather excellent tool box. Sifting through the treasure was a real treat and I think there is even some original 1968 cotton wool in the First Aid Kit. I have to confess, I haven’t investigated the PortaPotti yet!

I think that’s probably enough for an introduction, although I do have a question already – I need to get insurance and breakdown cover ASAP and would appreciate knowing which company offers the best service and value; I’ve looked at a few, but thought I’d consult the experts before committing myself.

Patrick's thread was very useful; I've received an on-line quote with Peter James of £88.30 (I'm twice Patrick's age, which has it's advantages. Well, it has this one single advantage, anyway!). I put 'Carawagon' in the Model field, and said 'No' to modifications - would that be correct? In other words, would that be enough to buy the policy based on the online quote or should I call and speak to them during office hours?

We've found the quotes vary with postcode area as much as age/experience!

If you're twice his age, you must be the same age as me That's not giving much away, is it

That's not a bad quote; I assume it includes breakdown/recovery as most Classic policies do?
The only other query you might need to make is whether you can get agreed value, otherwise if it is written off, you might just get scrap value

Really though, to be sure, speak to them.
Mention the parabolic springs - most insurance companies will accept them without comment or price hike. Some even accept 200/300TDi engine swaps without an increase.

Just think yourself lucky though, it was only 2-3 years ago that many of the classic car insurers didn't know what a Carawagon was - it's only through perseverance from members on here and the Series 2 Club that they finally seem to be listing it as a model

Actually, I'm not quite twice Patrick's age (maths is not my strong subject!) - but getting close....

Peter James look the best bet but will give them a call tomorrow just to make sure all the details are understood. Yes, it does include National and European Breakdown cover, Legal cover and unlimited mileage. They have a link to an Agreed Value form, but I get error 404 for that, so will have to ask them about that too.

good quote,seemed very professional,gave the european
breakdown,and an agreed value(which is very important
for a carawagon).You just have to send them3 or 4 good
pictures to confirm condition of landrover.

And yes Robin, it has taken me two years of harrassing the insurance companies to get them to recognise factory conversions. The irony is that I pay through the nose as mine is (currently) kept on the road. A new house is about to solve that....
