I think the Dormobile carriers are the same or very similar to the Carawagon ones, so Camping Gaz 907 bottles fit in very nicely, but are expensive to refill - around £20-£24 for 2.7kg of gas :aaagh:

With a slight modification (at least on the Carawagon ones) by slitting the bottom ring support, you can squeeze in a Calor Gas 3.9kg (propane for winter) or 4.5kg butane (same physical size) for summer use.
These are much cheaper to refill in the UK - around £14-£15 for more gas than the 907 bottles

However, if you're touring Europe, you might find the Camping Gaz 907 bottles much easier to swap - refills in Morocco are around £1 for the 907 bottles :nana1: though you will most likely get a well battered full bottle in place of your pristine empty one, and you might struggle to get the battered one swapped in the UK or Europe :thud:

I'm sure a Dormobile owner will be along to confirm sizes

Cheers,
Robin.

Hi Michiel

The Dormobile bottle carrier is designed to carry two Calor 3.9kg propane bottles. Two bottles last me all year, so traveling abroad not really an issue, unless you have a leak. On our 25 day Morocco trip we used about half a bottle.

Cheers Mick

Hi Robin

My rack is 100% Dormobile. I did chuck it back in the galvanising pot to make it last, but done nothing else to it.

Michiel

Make sure they are Calor botttles as other cheaper makes are slightly different size and will not fit. The Calor bottles are a very snug fit, which is good as they never move.

Cheers Mick

Hope nobody minds if I jump on this thread but I have a (slightly) related query.

The gas bottle holder from under the drivers seat on my Carawagon has gone missing - could a replacement be manufactured or purchased (the only ones I can find for sale are the newer type which seem to mount on the rear or on a roof rack and hold a sinlge largfer sized gas bottle)?

Any adivce gratefully received.

Cheers,
Phil

Hi Phil,

Obviously, the original holders were Carawagon specific (as far as I know) and so I don't think anything available will be easy to modify for under seat location.

The holders were the same whether they were under the driver's seat (on Carawagons with rear fuel tank) or behind the rear wheel on front fuel tank vehicles.

You didn't get to the bottles from inside, under the driver's seat - the holders were fixed to the chassis rail and hinged at the bottom with a padlock fitting at the top, so you undo the padlock and swing it down to replace the bottle.

Patrick's still has the original holders under the driver's seat - there were two fitted there.

I've got one here somewhere, off the chassis, if you want pictures and measurements.

Obviously, if you make your own you might want to make them a little larger diameter than original so you could fit a Calor gas bottle.

Cheers,
Robin.

Hi Robin,

Thank you for all the information - very helpful.

I'd really appreciate some pictures and measurements but only when it's convenient for you as to be honest it will probably be some time before I get round to sorting these out.

Cheers,
Phil

Hi Phil,

I'll try to remember on Saturday as I'll be delving into that shed anyway looking for something else.

If I forget, feel free to remind me :embarassed:

Cheers,
Robin.
